Writer's Block: Stories of old
Who is your favorite mythical creature/character, and why?

When I was in the fourth grade I wrote a story about a little girl from Artemis' temple who found the cubs of the Thebian Sphinx

and she hid them from the new King (we'd just learned a very little of the myth of Oedipus) and his hunters.

Later she took them to find Pegasus

because he could teach them how to fly.

For some reason my teacher called my mother in for a conference because she found the story "disturbing."

I still don't understand.

I have no idea either. You sounded like a very creative and smart child.

I think that was the problem - my story wasn't like anyone elses.

that sounds like a delightful story! I've no idea what could be disturbing about it.
Unless-oh! Oedipal references from a 4th grader maybe? Some teachers have very little grasp of how much that happens in their world children actually get.

I think it was just because it was longer than anyone else's ("you have to write at least one paragraph") and because it wasn't like anyone else's ("Midas was a dummy because. . .") I actually wrote a myth. A myth! ("Yes?" says Comedienne Carol Kane stepping out from behind the billboard. "I think we have a running joke," says Kermit).

*sigh* The principal dismissed it as "something about Ruth just rubs Mrs. Doughnert the wrong way."

Ah. I had a few teachers like that.
You know what's really disturbing? Teachers that object to smart kids, to the extent that they try to pretend there's something wrong with them.

Speaking of disturbing: I've got Neil Gaiman's blog on my flist, just because I adore that man's brain, and I just read today's entry- I think it's for you: (hands you metaphorical payphone)
"Hang on, I thought, if I read this in a book I'd be a bit worried"

My favourite, perfectly non-fictional conversation from today:

Scene: Somewhere in the Highlands & Islands. In a car. George is a local, and I am giving him a lift home.

Me: You know, George, I think that wood over there is where the golden eagles nest. There's a pair I've seen around a lot -- the ones I saw eating that hare -- and they always seem to go back to the wood around that black house on the hill. I've spotted both of them perching in those trees...

George: Could be, Neil. They wouldn't be disturbed much - the people who own that house came up from down South, but they stopped coming when they discovered it was haunted. (Realises he may have said something wrong. Decides to add something cheery.) At least your place isn't haunted.

Me: No. But it's cursed.

George: I wouldn't pay any attention to that. (Pause. Then, helpfully,) As long as you don't try and leave the house to your son, everyone should be fine.

PS: Not sure how long I'll be at Number One on this TIME list of the 140 Twitterers to follow -- probably not long -- but you can stop Sarah Palin's inexorable rise into first place by voting for me at http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2058946_2059139_2059131,00.html

PPS: These black and white photos of fairy tales look more like fairy tales do in my head than anything I've ever seen before: http://www.evilsunday.com/disturbing-fairy-tale-black-white-photos/

I wish I could remember more. The only copy vanished somewhere in time.
