If anyone noticed the man in the trench coat, they paid him no heed; they didn’t see a stranger. Later they would say they saw a friend, a neighbor, he didn’t mind.

Castiel helped sift rubble at the school. The island was among the poorest of the Earth. They did not deserve this disaster – but the Earth shrugged along its fault lines as it had done in other places at other times and this was the result.

“It’s been fifteen days,” argued a man somewhere behind him in the island’s musical patois. “There’s no hope – the other volunteers are giving up.”

“No,” said a woman fiercely. “The angel spoke to me in a dream. She is alive. My Darelene is alive!”

Castiel paused. Was one of his brethren among these people, offering them hope? He wanted to speak to the woman but -- wait, what was that?

“Here!” he shouted. “Someone is here!” He shoved aside more debris.

Willing hands joined his to dig. He helped them lift the slim, limp, gasping body from the concrete and rubble coffin she had been trapped in.

Her mother screamed her thanks to the heavens. Castiel stood, unmindful of the dirt on his face and wondered.

He was among them all day. After a meager meal, candles were lit and voices were raised in song.

Among the singing voices, Castiel became aware of a presence – one he had sought for so long.

“Father?” he whispered. He was answered.

Notes: On January 28, sixteen-year-old Darelene Etienne was pulled from the rubble of her school fifteen days after the massive quake. A spokesperson for the French field hospital could offer no explanation for her survival. Her mother has been quoted as saying she always believed her daughter would be found.

A local missionary returning from Haiti has said the following: “Every night, the refugees gather and they sing. When you hear them, you have no doubt that God is there.”

Oh, my dear, this is beautiful and perfect. Surely there were angels looking out for this girl. It's lovely to suppose Castiel has been there, too, in his homely way trying to keep hope alive.

Thanks for sharing this. You almost make me weep. *hugs*

Sadly, no, I haven't heard from Erin in some time and I've been wondering about her.
