Potatoes by Just Ruth
something that got into my head - it's original characters in the SPN universe.
(er, yes, the icon is the reason he's called Gabe - I have my own fantasy guest stars)

Title: Potatoes
Author: Just Ruth
Characters: Martha, Gabe
Rating: G
Summary: Brief domestic interlude
Word Count: 585 words

"Oh!" Martha threw up her hands. "I'm going for a walk!" She grabbed her coat and banged the door behind her. She hadn't asked Gabe to come with her.

Gabe chewed on his knuckle. He didn't understand why Martha was angry. He'd gotten everything on the shopping list. Martha had written three pounds of potatoes but when he got to the store, they had a sale where ten pounds of potatoes were buy one get one free. It was a good thing, wasn't it? But Martha didn't think so – Martha said they didn't need all those potatoes and when Gabe kept pointing out they were on sale, Martha got angry and went for a walk.

Gabe put away the groceries. He discovered that the bin Martha had for the potatoes wasn't big enough for all the potatoes. He had to put them in a paper bag next to the bin because he knew you never left potatoes in the plastic bags from the store because they spoiled faster.

Gabe chewed on his knuckle again. Now he understood what Martha had been saying. He washed his hands and set the table for dinner. Gabe sat down and thought hard. He didn't mean to make Martha angry. She went for a walk because she didn't want to yell at him. His head had been hurt by the bad shadows that left him behind the garbage dumpster at the church where Frank found him and sometimes Gabe forgot things or did things that were stupid - although neither Martha, Frank nor David when he was still living with them ever called them stupid.

Gabe knew the potatoes were stupid. He needed to do something to make Martha feel better. He thought some more and had an idea.

Martha sighed and hung up her coat. She'd had a nice long walk and was in a much calmer frame of mind. Of course, she still didn't know what in the name of heaven she was going to do with twenty pounds of potatoes. Frank would have probably made some joke so they could all laugh about it. Oh, God, how she missed Frank sometimes. She felt tears prick her eyes but she wrestled the ache in her heart back down. This wasn't the time for it.

"Martha?" Gabe was only a little taller than she was; a little too skinny no matter how much he ate with dark hair and sad dark eyes. Her heart lurched at the way he tentatively approached her – as if she was going to hit him.

"Do you think Reverend Keith could use a lot of potatoes?"

Reverend Keith at the homeless shelter, why hadn't she thought of that? "I bet he could, Gabe. That's a good idea."

"I'll only buy three pounds next time," he promised.

Martha hugged him as she went into the living room. "I'm sorry I got so frustrated, dear. . . what's this?"

Gabe ducked his head with a shy smile. "I made dinner."

So he had; bologna and cheese sandwiches with awkwardly cut chunks of carrots and celery and a small dish of mixed fruit – by the looks of it, Gabe had given her all the cherries. A glass of milk was next to each place. It was the first time he had ever tried to make dinner.

"Wonderful," Martha felt like she was going to cry but for entirely different reasons than a moment ago. "Wonderful, Gabe! I'm so proud of you!"

Gabe grinned and hugged her tight.

That's why it's more or less an original. :) I'm glad you liked it.
