The two old friends bowed to each other and headed out to the elegant garden. They wore dignified robes of silk and both wore the eboshi of rank high on their grey heads.

"Please permit me to call your attention to the white iris growing here," said the host, gesturing with his fan.

The guest looked on the graceful beauty of the flowers and nodded his appreciation. They bowed to each other again as they reached the little garden pavilion and seated themselves.

"Will you have tea?" asked the host.

"Thank you," his guest bowed on his knees. "I would be honored."

The host set the little kettle on the brazier.

"So," he said, "leave us dispense with needless formalities. How are you, Hiromasa?"

"I am doing well, Seimei," the elderly warrior of the Minamoto clan relaxed. "Your grandson caused a stir at the palace this afternoon."

"Did he now?" A tall, grim-faced warrior in green armor appeared with a small table on which a plate of sweet cakes had been arranged. "Ah, thank you, Rikugou ." The Shikigami bowed to both men, stepped back and vanished.

Seimei pulled back his sleeve and offered Hiromasa the platter. Taking up a napkin, Hiromasa chose a cake. The kettle whistled and Seimei prepared the tea.

"Yes, some of the older boys – including that Fujiwara son who fancies himself an onmyoujin, were speculating on your kitsune origins. Masahiro-san and his little . . . whatever-it-is, were under the decorative bridge and gave them a good scare."

"Eh! He should _not_ be using his powers that way," Seimei offered Hiromasa the cup of tea. "I shall have to scold him."

"He calls you an old tanuki," his friend sipped the tea. "Is it wise to place so much responsibility on his shoulders, Seimei?"

"Some people thought the same about _you_ old friend," Seimei smiled. "No, no, my Masahiro is to be the next defender of the city and he cannot begin too soon. Eh! It is only too bad that it is my grandson who holds the ability."

"What of the warrior? Is that not how it was with us? You with magic, I with strength and weapons." Hiromasa set down the cup and chose another sweet.

"He is there, he is with my grandson even now,"

"That little "whatever-it-is" is the warrior who will be the second defender."

Hiromasa frowned at him. "_That_?"

Seimei nodded, smiling at his friend's scowl. "Come, come, old friend, do not think too hard. Accept that it is not all that it seems, like many things in this world."

"Ah, you and your riddles," Hiromasa shook his head.

"So," said Seimei with a wicked, flirtatious smile. "Do I _look_ like a fox or a tanuki?"

"You," his friend retorted. "Are Seimei, and you will always be Seimei."

They both laughed.

Oh Ruth, that was lovely! ^_^

I know it's for Jan, but it still brightened my day.

*hugs* Also, thank you very much for the e-card. It's still hard, but it helps a lot knowing that people are there for me. ♥

I'm glad you enjoyed the story while knowing nothing about the characters.

It's mostly Jan's fault that I became interested in the anime, so I hope he likes it. Shonen Onmyouji is the story of Abe no Seimei's grandson who at the age of thirteen is forced into using his gifts to battle evil monsters and protect the Fujiwara Princess Akiko - surprisingly mature for a "children's" anime, nice artwork, some of the secondary characters are yummy eye candy. Masahiro clearly has a crush on Akiko and gets the cutest blush when she talks to him. :)

[flails] RUTH! This is a wonderful blending of the two sources! When I watch Shounen Onmyouji, I convince myself Hiromasa is lurking just around the corner. [grin]

I love how he refers to Mokun as little "whatever-it-is". [snickers]

A very sweet, calm vignette about two old friends. Thank you so much. It's perfect.

I'm so glad you liked it! Almost as soon as I began watching the series I saw comparisons to the movie (you can't tell me they didn't drawn the older Seimei to look like that by accident!) and I couldn't resist. :)

I like that you included the pictures. I already liked the story, but they made it even easier to visualize the characters as younger men. I like thinking they'll have a lifelong friendship.

If you ever have a chance to watch the movie that the stills are from; "Onmyouji" - aside from laughing until your sides hurt at the sheer campiness of it - you'll notice that Abe no Seimei and Minamoto no Hiromasa have a very close friendship indeed.
