For the yaoi_challenge Halloween mix-up

Drake Parker groaned a little as he worked his way back into his room with the walker. The Physical Therapist was a sadist, he was convinced of that. The red haired detective from the 27 th Precinct was recovering from a gunshot wound that had damaged one lung.

What made his wound especially bitter was that it had been made by another cop. Max Frame had been JJ Adams' friend and they thought he had come from Los Angles to visit. Max had come to steal drugs from the evidence locker. He had also come to humiliate JJ and try to break what he called "JJ's faith in human nature." He had killed one policeman in Los Angles. He killed the clerk of the evidence locker and wounded Drake.

Drake had only been able to lay on the floor and bleed as JJ argued with Max, trying to get him to put down his gun. It was possible JJ would have died as well, but Detectives Dee and Ryo had come running after a cable about Max came to the station. They ended up killing Max Fork.

The smell of chicken soup drifted from his room. He couldn't help but smile. JJ showed up almost every day with fresh stories and gossip from the station and what had to be the best chicken soup in New York City.

"JJ?" he paused at the door. The slim silver blond wasn't alone, an older man with grey-streaked dark blond hair who was only a little taller than JJ, making him about three to four inches shorter than Drake.

"Hi, Drake," JJ's face lit up with a bright smile. "This is my brother-in-law, Geraint."

"Pleased to meet you!" Geraint shook hands. "I'm just visiting for a bit before I catch the train to Ithaca. I teach at the college."

"Teach," JJ shook his head. "Geraint's the holder of the Henry Jones Senior chair of Arthurian studies."

"Just a fancy title for saying I make as much money as the next professor," Geraint waved dismissively. JJ scoffed. It was clear he was proud of his brother in law.

Drake settled himself into a chair and JJ slid the tray over with practiced ease. Drake tucked into the soup while JJ chattered about what was happening at the precinct house. Geraint added to the conversation by talking about his family; JJ's sister Annette and their two daughters, Guinevere and Vivienne. Drake thought wistfully of his brother serving in Korea and the nephews he had never seen.

"Have you heard from Sheila?" JJ asked.

Drake shoved the bowl away and folded his arms. "Hospitals creep her out. I told her to go to hell."

"I'm sorry," JJ laid his hand on his shoulder.

"Ah, nuts," Drake muttered, but gave JJ's hand a pat. After a moment, he finished the soup.

Geraint had been watching them with his chin on his fist.

"One of the legends of the Grail goes like this," he began quietly. "A King searched far and wide for the Grail. He searched until he lost his kingdom and all his friends. He was in rags, sick and weary when he came to a ruined castle. There was a traveling jongleur, a jester, a fool, who offered the ragged and weary King a place beside his fire. The King grew very sick and feared he would die.

Thirsty, he begged for a drink. The Fool fetched a cup of water from a well within the ruined castle. The cup was the Grail and when the King drank from it; he became well and whole again.

"You've brought me the Grail," he said the Fool.

"You were thirsty. I brought you water," said the Fool.

They say the King left the next morning. He left the Grail, but took the Fool with him."

"I don't get it," Drake frowned.

Geraint smiled. "He found something he valued more than the Grail."

Not long after that, they said their good byes and Drake lay down for a nap.

"So," said JJ as he left. "Is he the King or the Fool?"

"Depends on who he leaves the castle with," said Geraint.
