Summary: Some ties bind because Mummy said so. . .

“Why am I here?” asked the man in black dramatically as he entered the living area of the small London apartment.

“Because it’s Christmas and Mummy said we should at least be able to have a drink together at Christmas,” retorted the other man. He wore a dark brown suit. They were both tall, both lean and looked very much alike with their proud, high-arched noses. Anyone daring to remark that they looked identical would be corrected icily by one and corrosively by the other.

They might be twins, but they were certainly /not/ identical.

“Your usual, Severus?” asked the man in brown.

“Of course, Alexander,” said the man in black. Alexander poured two large whiskeys and handed one to Severus.

“Still swearing by what’s-his-name’s hammer?” asked Severus, sitting down.

“Grabthar,” said Alexander, “yes, I am. Still kissing the ass of that snobby little blond snot? Or have we gone beyond kissing?”

“You are disgusting.”

“You should talk.”

Severus took a swallow of the whisky. His eye brows raised. “This is rather expensive, isn’t it?”

“It’s Christmas,” said Alexander sharply. “I thought we might deserve it. Besides,” he added. “I’m leaving London for a bit.”

“Ah, going on tour again as that Lazarus fellow? Well, well, how amusing.”

“I need the money,” Alexander muttered as he sipped at his drink.

Severus studied the lights in the amber fluid. “If I can help. . .”

“Tut, help your nasty, un-wizard relatives? What/ever/ would your headmaster say?” Alexander snorted. “Besides, what would /I/ do with your gringots and gotliebs or whatever you call them? I doubt the Royal Bank of Scotland has an exchange rate.”

“At least I’m /offering/,” Snape spat. “That’s more than you’ve ever done.”

“Ah, well, that’s the trouble with poor relations, never can count on them for help. . .”

“Or gratitude.”

“More whisky?” Alexander topped Severus’ glass, then his own. They drank in silence, studying each other.

The clock chimed nine.

“Is that the time?” Snape downed the last of his drink. “Well, can’t stay, have papers to grade over Christmas break.” He stood up and headed for the door.

“Don’t let me keep you,” Alexander finished off his glass and stood up.

“Alex,” Snape paused at the door. “You might as well know. There’s a war coming in the Wizard world. You’re better off not being in England.”

“Really?” Alexander shifted uncomfortably. “Think it’s going to be bad?”

“Yes,” said Snape quietly. “Very bad.”

“I see,” Alexander rubbed his chin. “Well, for what it’s worth, good luck.” He held out his hand.

“For what it’s worth,” Severus shook his hand. They both pulled back and put their hands in their pockets, not really looking at each other.

“Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas.”

The ritual was over for another year.
