"Silent Night, Holy Night. . ."

The smell of wax and mellow glow of candles began to spread through the tiny church as the song rose from the pews. Neighbor turned to neighbor, lighting their candles from the flame that the pastor had taken from the Christ candle in the center of the Advent wreath.

"With the angels, let us sing,
Alleluia to our King. . .."

The old boards turned to a rich gold as light filled the small room. Shadows fled before it to crouch up in the old rafters.

"Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!"

"Beautiful," whispered Sam Winchester.

"Yeah," agreed Dean Winchester, hefting the gas can. "Too bad we have to burn the place."

The sanctuary went dark, a cold wind whistled through the gaping holes in the old roof and the broken windows. Sam nodded and started sprinkling salt.

Nicely played! I seriously didn't see the twist coming *applause*

Oh, wow! This was breathtakingly beautiful, and I seriously didn't expect Dean to say "burn it," or to agree with Sam about the beauty of the service. And it was a very nice choice, to include a song that mentions angels. That throws a whole new layer of complexity on to the piece, given the year the boys are having. Nice job!

Actually, I intended it as a "whenever" - the song is the last verse of "Silent Night" that we sing at our church

Silent Night, Holy Night
Wonderous star, lend thy light
With the angels let us sing
Alleluia to Our King
Christ the Savior is Born!
Christ the Savior is Born!

I'm glad you liked it though.

Wow. So beautiful and so sad! I didn't see the ending coming, either, and it was such a jolt to go from all that light and music, to a cold and empty shell of a church ... *sighh*

And this:
Shadows fled before it to crouch up in the old rafters.
Pure poetry. :-)

It all started with a television show on ghost towns and the sad picture of a lost little church; and then when I was serving in our candlelight service on Christmas Eve it all came together.

The line about the shadows was the thought that went through my head standing in our church as the candles were lit one by one.

I'm so glad you liked it.

Yes, it reminded me of church services when I was a kid at home. I grew up Methodist, so we did the candle lighting and fir boughs hung around the sanctuary, and all that. I miss that lovely Christmas church smell of evergreen and candle wax ... :-)

*nods* and sometimes such memories linger - especially in the SPN universe.
