Summary: "We should be able to go to a normal restaurant . . ."
Word Count: 704

"Oh, yes, Mr. Winner, party of two," said the ash-blond hostess, "We'll be seating you shortly."

The older woman in the subdued blue suit gathered the menus and a wine list. She glanced at the two men standing in the crowd, the bland expression on her face did not change, but her grey eyes seemed to darken.

Quatre felt his back stiffen and he resisted the urge to touch his chest. _Concern, sadness_ Why was she projecting so? Trowa tugged at his tie. His eyes darted from one side to the other; sweeping the room.

_He's as jumpy as I am,_ Quatre resisted the urge to sigh. _Damn it, we're eighteen years old; we've been out of the War for three years. We should be able to go to a normal restaurant and have dinner without being on edge!_ He had said as much to Dr. Proctor and the doctor had suggested this restaurant. It was small, unpretentious, most of the patrons appeared to be middle class couples of a variety of ages.

"Mr. Winner?" the hostess almost – but not quite- touched his arm. Quatre held himself still, aware of the crowd at his back. Trowa's left shoulder was twitching. "If you'd be willing to wait in the bar a few more minutes, we can clear a table along the wall for you."

_Are we that obvious?_ he smiled, dry mouthed. "No, no, any table will be fine."

"Are you certain? We want you to be comfortable." She meant it.

Quatre felt his smile become more genuine. "I'm serious. We'll be just fine."

"Then right this way, please," she led them to a small table that was nearly in the center of the room. _Open, vulnerable_ For a moment, he almost reconsidered.

Trowa nudged him subtly . Quatre squared his shoulders and sat down with his back to the main entrance. The muscles in his back twitched. The hostess handed the menus to them and gave him the wine list, assuring them "Edward will be with you shortly to tell you our specials."

"Ok?" asked Trowa.

"No," Quatre reached for his water glass.

"Me neither," Trowa's left shoulder twitched again. "We can do this."

"I know."

Trowa's eyes narrowed as he looked past Quatre's shoulder. "Our hostess is speaking to four different people; they look like wait staff."

"It probably has nothing to do with us," Quatre held himself still so he would not turn around and look.

"Mm," Trowa grunted and turned to his menu. Quatre glanced over the wine list. It was not the most elegant selection, but it was adequate for their needs.

"Good evening," said the man in a neat white jacket, he was perhaps five years older than they were. "My name is Edward, our specials this evening are. . ." He rattled off an appetizer, a meat course and two different fish entrees plus their one-of-a-kind dessert of the day.

Quatre made his choice and Trowa, as usual, chose steak. They settled on a rose wine and were thanked warmly.

"He approached from the side," Trowa noted. "A straight line would have brought him behind you; he approached from the side."

The wine steward also approached from the side. Quatre felt the tension between his shoulders ease. Their food was delivered, also from the side. Trowa leaned back a little, chewing on his steak.

There was a crash of dropped plates. Quatre immediately reached across the table and grabbed Trowa's wrist as his hand locked on the steak knife. Trowa went dead white. He shuddered and stayed in his seat. The hostess stepped away from her station and watched them closely.

"We're almost done," Quatre whispered.

"Yes," Trowa's fingers slowly released the knife. "Yes." He drained his wine glass and the color started to come back to his face.

Edward came over to ask if they wanted anything else. They had a brief discussion about dessert but settled on coffee instead.

****

"What did you think?" asked the doctor.

"It could have been better," Quatre admitted. "All the same. Where did you hear of that restaurant?"

"The hostess used to be my Captain," the doctor explained.

"Ah, that explains a lot."

"Are you going to go back?"

"I think we'll try again, soon."

I can picture Trowa grabbing the knife, ready to protect Quatre, if need be. I imagine how hard it would be to try to have a normal life after what they've been through. I can see something like this happening a lot. ^_~

Usually you see fics where the boys are having trouble adjusting to the 'real world' and there's an us-against-them philosophy. I really enjoyed seeing someone understand their concerns and work to make their lives just a bit easier.

Thank you! I tried to make the Doctor a little sympathetic because a lot of Doctors are in real life.

Excellent story.

When I was a server, I had a reqular customer who was ex-something. Quatre and Trowa act just like he did. (only he almost stabbed the buss boy once.)

Thank you. I must admit your story "To Protect and Serve" (which I'm working through a few chapters at a time) helped inspire this piece.
