(fic) Quiet Moment by Ruth (SDQB 444# 7 Absence)
Fic Title: Quiet Moment
Author: Ruth
Pairings: None
Rating: G.
Warnings/Spoilers: stretched time line Alternate Universe
Story Summary: Foraging for the troops, Quatre finds a moment of peace.
*********

The male sparrow twittered a territorial warning. Quatre stopped in his tracks. It had been a long time since he’d heard a bird singing. The grinding noise of battle had been dominating his life since he and Heero had landed on Earth. He had come to the weary conclusion that in Europe there was an absence of the beauty he’d come to love at the Maganac oasis.

Another sparrow answered, acknowledging that the other sparrow’s territory might be /there/ but his was /here/.

Quatre walked on and found another ruined house. Airstrike, he guessed by the way the rood had caved in. With the company’s cook wounded, Quatre had taken over his duties and was foraging to find something to put in the pot. He walked up to the house.

A sharp bark of warning stopped him. A medium sized shaggy brown dog stood by the doorway. It lowered its head and woofed again.

“Hello there!” Quatre put down his pack and showed the dog both hands. “Here boy!”

The dog wagged its tail and came over to sniff at him. It panted and licked his hand.

“Good boy,” Quatre scratched his ears. “Good, good boy.” He started to go into the house and the dog growled.

“It’s okay, boy,” he kept his voice calm. The dog whined, uncertain, then wagged his tail and followed Quatre into the house. He saw a bag of dried dog food that looked like it had been eaten at. The dog had food, and from a leaking pipe had plenty of water. There were some canned goods among the ruins of a cupboard. Quatre looked them over and gathered them into his backpack. One of the things he kicked up was a framed photo of a family. Two adults, three children and the dog. He stood and looked at it sadly.

“They left you behind, boy?” he asked. The dog just wagged his tail at him. Quatre walked out and found a seat on what might have been a porch. He ate the sandwich he had made himself, sharing bits with the dog.

The birds started singing again. The sun was warm. Quatre let himself bask for awhile, the dog resting its head on his knee. He checked the angle of the sun and sighed.

“I’ve got to go back, boy,” he explained. He stood up, shouldered his heavy pack and slapped his thigh. “Come on, boy! Come on!” It would be an extra mouth to feed, but he couldn’t leave the dog alone.

It wagged its tail at him, then walked over by the doorway and sat down.

“Come on!” Quatre called again. The dog lay down and wagged its tail again. It would not leave.

“All right then, you wait for them,” Quatre sighed.

He turned and headed back to the rendevous point. He would say later it was one of his best days on Earth before he came to the Sank Kingdom.

I really like this. Sometimes it's the little things that make the memories and the difference.

I liked the way it started with sparrows, then the dog, and how it wouldn't leave, but waited, plus Quatre's interaction with it. He understood.

I'm with Anne. I really like the parallel between the birds and the dog.
